Real Talk: the Problem with Waiting Until You're Ready

Hey, everyone and happy Thursday. I hope you all are having a wonderful week so far. Tuesday night my littles officially got their own littles, which means I am officially a gbig. Wow, do I feel old! :P Maybe it's my recent passing down of tradition or the foggy fall days, but I've been very introspective this week. For way too long I've been telling myself I'm not 'ready'-- not ready for a lot of things. I'm not ready to get the job of my dreams because I don't have enough experience. I wasn't ready to move out on my own because I don't have full time job. I wasn't ready to start a blog because I didn't know what I was doing. I'm not ready- not ready-- not ready. After unintentionally putting myself down for so long, I realized I was doing it all wrong. Because who on earth is ever 'ready'?

What I've realized in my job hunt and blog life and life post graduation in general, is that if you wait until you're ready, you'll never be ready. When I first started this blog, I was watching SarahBelle YouTube videos like it was my job and had just started piecing together my own sense of fashion. I had no idea what I was talking about and was still learning myself, but I was inspired and wanted to take the leap to start my own blog. I had no idea what I was getting myself into and wouldn't know the half of blogging for another year and half after that. Talk about not being ready! Logically, I probably should have waited. I should have done more research, read other peoples' blog, or otherwise invested in the adventure I was about to start. But the problem with waiting until you're ready is that you may never be 'ready'. There were so many things I 'needed' to know -- so many steps I should have taken-- when it came to blogging that I didn't have the knowledge about or money to invest in. Heck, there's still a lot I don't know about or things I haven't invested in. But there are so many amazing opportunities and experiences I've gained from starting this blog when I sure as hell wasn't 'ready'.

And that's life.

When will you ever be ready? How can you even know what 'ready' is if you're constantly learning and gaining new experiences? At some point in life, you realize you have a handle on things. That you're surviving without needing to fully understand all of the steps, or without investing in everything you're 'supposed' to be investing in. But if you wait to ask for that promotion, if you wait to start that new business or relationship or family -- if you keep putting your life, your passions, the things that truly inspire or excite you on hold until you're ready, you'll end up missing out on a lot of what life has to offer. All we can do is take it one day at a time and do the best we can. So don't wait until you're ready! Jump in head first. The beauty is that you've started--you've set yourself on track for something that could lead to an amazing adventure. Sure, it may be a flop, but you'll never know until you start. Some day you might find you were 'ready' all along.

  1. I love this! I heard somewhere that "the best way to learn about running a business is to be in business." Yes, research is helpful, but the point of the quote was that you're much more motivated and likely to pursue that research once you start. I think this is applicable to so many areas of life. :)

  3. I waited over a year to start a newsletter because I didn't think I was ready. I didn't think I had enough to say or that people would like me and want to follow me. Well, I just kicked off my newsletter a week ago and I couldn't be more thrilled. Setting everything up has been a ride and I can't wait to keep learning and giving back to my community.

  4. I love this. Somebody said "say yes, then figure it out." In regard to new ventures. That has stuck with me. This is great!

  5. Love this! Waiting until (insert anything here), is a barrier to happiness! Go for it!

  6. I love this! I really needed this today. I will be sharing this on various platforms because it is so relatable to everyone. I am currently switching my career focus from performance (musical theatre) to social media management/marketing. I have 2 degrees in music and 0 in business/marketing. I kept telling myself that I wasn't ready - that I needed to learn more - and a career advisor reminded me that I will never feel "ready" and need to just jump in. This post helped confirm that for me. I love that you mentioned kind of jumping into blogging. I did the same thing! I woke up one day and thought "I'm going to start a blog" and threw it together in about 3 days and here I am - pursuing my new passion - and its working out pretty well! You can do anything you set your mind to, love. I believe in you!

  7. I love this! Its so hard to jump in and do something you're scared of, but in order to really accomplish anything you have to! Thanks for sharing!

  8. I love this so much! Honestly, if you just jump into something, you'll learn a lot easier/quicker than reading and reading about it. Nothing beats experience.

  9. So true! Sometimes we just need to go for it rather than spending all our time scribbling on the whiteboard. Thank you!

  10. I love this! It's so true! I told myself the same thing with my blog and I put off starting it for years because I "wasn't ready". Now I just wish I hadn't listened to myself and started a long time ago!

  11. "If you wait until you're ready, you'll never be ready." This sentence is so true!! I just read a book which had this lesson. After reading this post, I really wonder if we can really be fully ready. And maybe because we are never ready, we are thrown with multiple things at sudden instances. Great post! :)

  12. If I waited until I was ready I would never accomplish anything. The only thing that I wait until I am ready for is laundry.

  13. Grab the bull by the horns! If I waited until I was ready, I would never get anything done!

  14. I completely agree with this. It is so important to remind ourselves of this regularly. Just do it anyway. The time is never perfectly right. I love your examples!

  15. I totally agree! I started my blog when I wasn't ready. If I would have seen all of the things coming (like the technical part), I would have waited. I am sure glad that I didn't wait!

  16. I love the sentiment behind this. The truth is you won't be ready till you just do and even then you will learn.

  17. Congrats on being a Gbig!!! Trust me you will only keep feeling older haha ;-) And I love this post. There is no "right" time and we are never really ready for anythign life throws at us, no matter how prepared we are. I am all about jumping in with two feet and seeing what happens!

  18. This is so true. Especially of my blog. I always say - "I need time to build this up and take this class." But what better time than now? I'm also a sorority gal and remember thinking I had to wait to get a little until I had time to really get it together. But if you just do it (and I am so glad I did) then you are forced to get it together and it all works out better. Congrats!

  19. YES!

sometimes you just need to think "what's the worst that could happen if I just DO it now... and what will be my regrets if I don't?"

often those regrets will outweigh the "what ifs" - why reign yourself in when you can give something new a try, even if you're not ready?

  20. How exciting to be a grand big! I miss sorority life at times. I agree that if you always wait to be "ready", you're never going to take chances you need to take. There are so many things I am not ready for but I know that sometimes I have to take a leap of faith and just do it. If I fail then that's okay but if I succeed that is even better. Great post!

  21. This is all so true! I always force myself to do things before I'm ready....I just moved to Costa Rica and by all means, I wasn't "ready" - I should have saved more money, researched more, done more whatever....but I had an opportunity and I took it and now here I am! :)

  22. Love this and completely agree! It's so hard to take that leap of faith but it almost always pays off in the end!
