embroidery & street art

Hey all! This past weekend was one packed full of fun activities. Earlier this week, I wrote about my latest brunch trip  to Waffles INCaffeinated. This meal left me pleasantly full and ready to take on the rest of the beautiful Sunday afternoon. One of my favorite parts of Pittsburgh is the abundance of art. It seems that every where you look there is another fun mural, museum or theatre. If you know where to look and are looking for it, you can find art just about anywhere in Pittsburgh! So while my boyfriend and I were walking home from our brunch outing, I couldn't resist taking advantage of a photo opportunity with these beautiful pieces of street art.

The first stop on our trip home was this beautiful mural. The mural, "Remembers Workers, Remembers Veterans"  by Lucas Stock and other artists, is located in South Side, right on East Carson and is painted on the side of the Veteran's Leadership Program building. These bright, vibrant colors draw in the viewers and the subject matter holds their attention. It's hard to miss this! And why would you want to?! I love how abstract it is, while still letting viewers know what it's about. Maybe I just love geometric shapes, but this one is definitely impressive!

These next few pieces are one of my favorite art installations in Pittsburgh! They are created by Baron Batch, a former Steelers football running back. His artwork (POP-X style art) crops up all over Pittsburgh. In fact, he is said to use elephants as his subject matter as a way of representing community--the Pittsburgh community.  I'm told he hangs out at a local coffee shop and, if you're lucky, he may even sketch a mini elephant on your coffee cup (he's actually known for doing that while there)! These two feature a pink elephant, however, the others come in a variety of colors and sizes. I know I'll definitely be on the lookout for more while exploring the Pittsburgh community! Click here to see more of his work!

Located on East Carson Street across from "Remembers Workers, Remembers Veterans".

'Another Day in Paradise'

Located on Larkins Way in South Side.

This was the first of his installations I have seen. Which is surprising considering the other is right on East Carson!

Naturally, I can't leave you all without talking about this adorable dress! I picked this beauty up at Forever 21 last week in preparation for a night out with my boyfriend and his family. I'm not usually a fan of burnt orange, but this particular dress stood out to me. Maybe it's because it reminds me of the sun or Arizona, but I love how the dark, ruddier color is paired with the delicate, ivory embroidery. This embroidery and off the shoulder cut, gives this dress the feminine flare it needs. I've also been crazy about off the shoulder dresses this summer, so maybe thats just why I like it so much! :P

Naturally the dress is not available online, but I'm loving this, this and this as alternatives!

Between brunch, this dress and exploring the street art of South Side, I would say this Sunday was definitely one for the books! I can't wait to keep exploring this summer to see what else I can find and check off my list! Catch all my adventures as they happen on Snapchat (rachellynn), Instagram, Twitter and Facebook! And, as always, don't forget to subscribe to stay up to date on all things Rachel Lynn. Until then,

xoxo,

    1. I don't think I'm brave enough to try hand embroidering myself. I did a little when I was younger as a hobby. But it's so beautiful when it's done right and I never thought I was any good at it, hahaha. It's definitely a challenging and rewarding hobby, though. That's for sure!
