10 Must Watch Flicks for Halloween

I love Halloween. I love everything about it!  --the spookiness in the air, the terror around every corner, walking around trick or treating, hoping nothing pops out at you. The thrill can be intense and this year I am more than ready for it! I've been  signing up for 'haunted' events like it's my job and am actually going to Fright Nights at Kennywood tonight! (Be sure to follow along my snapchat for all of the ghostly fun -- rgolden75!) Can you believe Halloween is only 17 days away?! There's so much I want to do before it arrives! To get in the Halloween mood, or to keep the excitement rolling, I love watching something spooky. There's nothing better than huddling up with your favorite people to shriek every time the monster lunges on screen. So, today, in honor of this very spooky time of year, I'm brining you my favorite shows and movies to help me get in the Halloween spirit!

 1. American Horror Story
If you've been reading along with my posts lately, AHS has been a bit of an obsession of mine and its no secret why. This show has every thing Halloween-- from ghosts to psychos to 'freaks' and murders. And there certainly is no short supply of mystery! What I especially love about this series is how different, yet oddly similar each of the seasons are. It's not like they recycle plots or you get bored of seeing similar story lines play out, but there is definitely a faint, underlying thread that you just can't figure out. Each season can be watched alone or out of order and you wouldn't be any the wiser.

 2. Stranger Things
If you haven't started watching this show, I advise you to cancel all of your plans tonight, grab a bag of popcorn and your favorite comfort blanket and start watching! This season has only eight episodes-- EIGHT! This can easily be completed in one evening and you won't want to stop watching once you've started. The story line is so intense, yet believable and the characters are absolutely phenomenal. I love how the story follows closely to the children. This gives such a unique point of view in an otherwise adult driven world.

 3. Halloween
I can remember cuddling up next to my mother with all of my siblings to watch this movie (and subsequent series). I can't honestly handle ghosts. Ghosts freak me tf out! But I can deal with movies about murders. So when I was old enough to start watching scary movies, I would stay away from anything supernatural and stick with the movies about serial killers (makes sense...).

 4. Scream
Another classic murder movie made into a series. These movies are always on repeat every Halloween season. The worst part about this movie, though, was walking around on Halloween trick-or-treating as a small child and seeing all of the 'scream' costumes out. I can remember staring all of them down and making sure I knew where they were at all times. Thank God I always went out in packs, or I probably would have peed myself every time I saw one!

 5. The Nightmare Before Christmas
I honestly didn't get into this movie until I went to college (strange, I know). For whatever reason, this wasn't a show I watched growing up. I remember coming to college and people being shocked I had never seen it before. As soon as I saw it, I knew it was going to be a classic Halloween movie-- even as a young adult. My sophomore year of college, I was so cool & had so many friends I stayed in on Halloween and watched it.. by myself. There used to be Instagram proof of this evening, but I have since then deleted the picture, hahah.

 6. A Nightmare on Elm's Street
Now, I know I said earlier that I can't handle ghosts-- which is completely true. I honestly and truly can't. I still have nightmares every time I watch a movie or show with a ghost in it. In recent years, I have forced myself to watch ghostly entertainment. My logic is the more I watch the more okay I'll be in the future. It is inherently flawed logic, and I have, in fact, woken up several times over the past few months shrieking from a nightmare, but I love Halloween, so I will continue torturing myself. :)

 7. The Shining
The first time I watched this movie was after a long night of trick-or-treating at my friend Ali's house. Her neighborhood was the best to trick-or-treat in. We has lots of other school friends in the area and the houses always gave out the best candy. It was the perfect place to walk down the street squad deep in our matching costumes. After an evening of fun, we begged her mother to put on a scary movie for us to watch before we went to sleep. We were only in 6th or 7th grade, so she stayed up to watch it with us. I can still remember her racing to the tv to cover up the naked lady she forgot about with the movie box (yes, I was alive when movies were on cassette tapes).

 8. The Vampire Diaries
This is another show I highly recommend watching! I've been addicted to this show since my senior year of high school and I can't wait for the next season to premiere on the 21st! This show focuses mainly on vampires (obvi), but there are so many other supernatural elements thrown in. I've been dying to re-watch the series. The Damon, Elena, Stephan love triangle is my actual favorite!

 9. Rocky Horror Picture Show
The music theatre geek in me had to include this lovely number to the list. Although, I've never watched it live, this movie has been such a Halloween classic. Various groups at Pitt stage this show every Halloween season, so I should probably get my butt out and watch it eventually.

 10. Hocus Pocus
Last, but certainly not least is the pinnacle of Halloween movies-- Hocus Pocus. I also watched this movie as a young child at a sleepover & ever since I was hooked! I loved the fact that the talking cat was such an important character in the movie. ((crazy cat lady alert)) This movie was the starting point of my love for Halloween. Ever since then, the magic and mystery continually drew me in. From this point on, I put my abnormal fear of everything aside in the spirit of the holiday and reveled in the idea that magic could be waiting around the next corner -- all you had to do was look for it.
